‘ Ilo Ilo’ is a slice of social realism that revolves around a family in Singapore in the 90′s employing a Filipino maid, Teresa, to help with the household chores and look after their difficult son Jiale. The young Jiale, in trouble at school and seemingly shut down to the rest of the world, is resistant to the arrival of the maid. Teresa simply wants to better her life, but Jiale is intent on sabotaging her efforts until an accident brings them together and they start to bond. Jiale’s mother, however, starts to become jealous of the relationship that her maid is forming with her young son.
Ilo Ilo is a gentle, sympathetic and engaging drama which is compassionate yet unsentimental. It boasts superbly unaffected performances from the core cast and will stay with you for a long time after leaving the cinema.
‘Ilo Ilo’ will be screened on Friday 7th November at 8.00pm (with refreshments available from 7.30) in the Jubilee Hall on Slade Road. Admission is £5.00 (£4.50 concessions) and all are most welcome.
