 | The Last King of Scotland | Year: 2007 | Director: Kevin Macdonald | Certificate: 15 | Screening date: Thursday, 28th February, 2008 | Summary: In the early 1970’s, Nicholas Garrigan, a young semi-idealistic Scottish doctor, comes to Uganda to assist in a rural hospital. Once there, he soon meets up with the new President, Idi Amin. Garrigan hits it off immediately with the rabid Scotland fan, who soon offers him a senior position in the national Health Department and becomes one of Amin’s closest advisors. However, as the years pass, Garrigan cannot help but notice Amin’s increasingly erratic behaviour growing beyond a valid fear of assassination into a murderous insanity that is driving Uganda into bloody ruin. Realising the dire situation, Garrigan must make some crucial decisions that could mean his death if the despot finds out.
| Reviews: "A smart, searing thriller with blistering performances from McAvoy and Whitaker. Like the best Grahame Green film Graham Greene never wrote."
Total Film - Nev Pierce
"Talk about getting your teeth into a juicy role. Forest Whitaker has been given a sextuple whopper with extra cheese - and he supplies the relish. This is the kind of performance for which awards are designed. The Last King of Scotland is a riveting satire of white Europe's horrified fascination with Africa as a Conradian heart of darkness, which is nevertheless ripe for plunder for a sufficiently cocksure adventurer."
