Summary: Set in 1985, working class student Brian Jackson, navigates his first year at Bristol University. When the chance arises he seizes his opportunity to live the dream of appearing on University Challenge. Bristol’s progress in the contest is effectively a metaphor for the more universal themes of the tale – Brian’s grief for his dead father, the confusion of falling in love for the first time, and the broader agonies of growing up and leaving home. As friendships evolve, values change and mistakes are inevitably made.
It’s laden with intelligence, sensitivity, a keen understanding of human relationships and a sharp sense of humour.

Reviews: "Best of all is McAvoy. His performance deserves full honours for the the naturalness with which he conveys Brian's awkwardness and brings depth to such scenes as recalling his dead father. He's the appealing heart of a film that provides warm, cosy viewing. Sometimes warm and cosy is just what one wants."
Times on Line - Ian Johns

"McAvoy is superb, with great support provided by the hilarious Catherine Tate, History Boys' Dominic Cooper and a scene-stealing turn by Benedict Cumberbatch. Chuck in a killer Eighties soundtrack and you get the brightest Brit comedy of the year. It'll will blow all your winter blues away and leave you feeling warm inside . . . GO SEE."
The Sun - Johnny Vaughan
